From the Grassroots Up
How K.A.C.E.T., a workshop in 2015, became a nationwide movement for certified, market-ready skills.
KACET began on 14th July 2015, at a Government-led consultative workshop at the Panafric Hotel in
Nairobi, convened by the Ministry of Industrialization to map out a path to a mid-level industrialised
Kenya by 2030. Our founder, Rev. Nelson M. Kariuki, an Ashoka Fellow who had previously worked as an
allocating agent on the GOK/World Bank MSETT voucher training project (1998–2002), saw a persistent
gap: talented workers with no way to prove what they could do.
When the Government of Kenya enacted the TVET Act of 2013, creating TVETA, CDACC, and the Kenya
National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), the opportunity finally existed to close that gap properly.
KACET was registered as a Trust in May 2016 and incorporated under the Perpetual Succession Act
Cap. 164 (Laws of Kenya) in February 2018. We hold a registered KIPI trademark and are currently
pursuing accreditation with the Kenya Accreditation Service (KENAS).
Today, KACET operates as a social enterprise with both for-profit and non-profit dimensions.
coordinating training, examinations and certification across 18 industry sectors, in partnership with
national bodies and county governments across Kenya.
To improve income generation and living standards for rural and urban households through low-cost,
demand-driven, practical technical and vocational training and certification, creating a market for
standardized Kenyan products and services.
